Board Opportunity

For more than 60 years, the Betty and Bobby Allison Ozarks Counseling Center has been ensuring that people who need help with their problems have access to therapy. Our mission is to provide affordable mental healthcare, regardless of ability to pay. As a nonprofit and United Way partner, we are able to offer services on a sliding-fee scale based on income. The bottom line is, we do not turn anyone away for inability to pay.

Our Board of Directors is a working board. We plan two major fundraisers every year, the Not So Newlywed Game and the Counseling Classic Golf Tournament, both very fun and successful events which raise $60,000 per year. We also have internal/administrative committees such as board development, building, fund development, and executive committees. We have a lot of fun supporting the clinic’s mission, which is to provide mental health services/counseling to the community, regardless of a client’s ability to pay.

People come to see us for all sorts of reasons: difficulty in their marriage, problems with children’s behavior, grief for a loved one, and anxiety over the loss of a job are just a few examples. We also help with referrals for folks who have more serious psychiatric problems needing medication in addition to talk therapy. Last year we served more than 2,300 individuals for more than 12,000 hours of service at an average charge of $15/hr as compared to the market rate of $90-120/hr. At the Betty and Bobby Allison Ozarks Counseling Center, we see adults, adolescents, children, and couples. We also offer mediation services, a divorcing parents’ class, supervised visitation and anger management. As the poverty rate in Springfield and the surrounding area has continued to rise, we have seen an increase in demand for our services and we could use your help in providing a safety net for the most vulnerable members of our community.

Requirements: We ask each director to attend the monthly board meetings, plus any committee meetings and the actual events. Financially, we ask each director to give or get (in the form of securing sponsorships and donations) $600 per year.

Meeting times: Currently, our board meetings are at 11:30 on the 4th Monday of the month.
